| Research Summary/Text: |
The 3rd International Conference on Concussion in Sport was held in Zurich, Switzerland on 29-30 October 2008 bringing together experts including researchers in clinical medicine, sports medicine, neuroscience, neuroimaging, athletic training and sports science. Discussion was based on specific questions posed to participants and informed by systemic literature review and presentation of data. The consensus statement is a record of the conference outcomes. It is a revision and update of recommendations developed following the 1st (Vienna) and 2nd (Prague) International Symposia on Concussion in Sport.
|
| Research Objectives: |
The aim of the conference was to apply a formal consensus-based approach to develop a set of principle messages about the science, assessment, management and prevention of concussion in sport. The consensus statement developed by the conference is intended for use by physicians, therapists, certified athletic trainers, health professionals, coaches and others involved in the care of injured athletes and prevention of injury at the recreational, elite or professional levels.
|
| Research Outcomes: |
The specific research questions and discussion of the conference produced consensus statements about:
The definition and classification of concussion; Evaluation for diagnosis of concussion both on-field and in the emergency room; the range of additional investigations; concussion management including protocol for return to play; Modifying factors in concussion management; Considerations for special populations such as children under the age of 10 years; Injury prevention including the role of protective equipment and rule changes; Knowledge transfer including educational strategies; Future directions for key areas of research; and Medico-legal considerations.
|
| Research Implications: |
Physicians, therapists, certified athletic trainers, health professionals, coaches and others involved in the care of injured athletes and prevention of injury at the recreational, elite or professional levels should familiarise themselves with the principle messages outlined in the consensus statement and use of validated tools such as the Sports Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT2).
