Research Summary/Text: In New Zealand, the Accident Compensation Corporation developed a 10-point action plan, called SportSmart, for community-based amateur sport as a strategy to reduce injuries in sport. Subsequently, several sport-specific programs – NetballSmart and SoccerSmart – were introduced. These programs included delivery of education programs to coaches covering the ten key injury prevention points of: screening; warm-up, cool-down and stretch; physical conditioning; technique; fair play; protective equipment; hydration and nutrition; injury reporting; environment; and injury management.

A small-size descriptive study was conducted by surveying both netball and soccer coaches following participation in education programs delivered between 2005 and 2006. Netball coaches were surveyed by telephone interview in October 2005, between four to seven months after they had participated in the education program. Soccer coaches were surveyed in March 2007, up to twelve months post-participation, via an email questionnaire.
Research Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of integrating sports injury prevention information into coach education, specifically to evaluate the quality and use of the course resource material, and the extent to which coaches had incorporated injury prevention behaviours into player practices.
Research Outcomes: Of the 217 netball coaches who responded to the survey, 89% changed the way they coached to some degree (a little, somewhat or a lot) with the biggest impact being on players landing and stopping techniques, dodging ability and cool-down/recovery procedures. Nearly all coaches had read and passed on the information from course resources (booklet and wallet card) to players.

The survey of soccer coaches included questions about coaching behaviour change which revealed that of the 62 soccer coaches who responded, the area of greatest change was in player profiling, with 26% of coaches now incorporating this in their coaching sessions. Other areas of significant change were warm-up/cool-down, technique, fitness and nutrition/hydration. The resources described as most useful by coaches were booklet, DVD and wallet card. The least useful resource was perceived to be posters
Research Implications: Uptake and application of injury prevention information in both netball and soccer coaching sessions subsequent to the education program was high. One year after the education program soccer coaches continued to use the information in their coaching practice demonstrating longer-term retention of information and sustained behaviour change. Resources such as wallet cards and brochures are valuable sources of information for coaches and players as part of an education program.

In both soccer and netball, action points relating to core aspects of the sport such as warm-up/cool-down, technique and conditioning were those in which coaches gained most from the education programs. While the education program appears to have had a significant positive impact on the incorporation of player profiling into soccer coaching sessions, it remained the area least likely to be taken up.

The use of telephone interview conducted 4-7 months after participation generated a significantly higher response rate (53%) than that for email survey distributed 12 months after participation (20%), indicating that it may be a more effective method of data collection for this type of program evaluation. However, data collected at 12 months was able to be used to demonstrate longer-term outcomes.
