Research Summary/Text: Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. With further growth of the sport and an anticipated increase in related injuries examination of the research evidence for injury prevention strategies is timely. Research evidence was included in the review if it met a set of relevance criteria.
Research Objectives: The aim of the review is to examine evidence on the effectiveness of current injury prevention strategies in soccer, determine the applicability of the evidence to children and youth, and make recommendations on policy, programming and future research.
Research Outcomes: Of the 44 potentially relevant articles found only four met the inclusion criteria. The four studies addressed a range of interventions including education, training programs, information provision, environmental change, use of orthoses and taping, regulation and game modification. Of the four studies one received a poor quality rating and the others were of moderate quality. Only one study was focused on injury prevention in youth. The research reviewed in this study has provided modest evidence on the effectiveness of training programs to reduce injury in adults.
Research Implications: Further research is needed to focus specifically on training programs for youth and children. These include proprioceptive training and multicomponent programs incorporating warm up, cool down, stretching and strength training.

Other recommendations include: the introduction of soccer injury surveillance; investigating the use of standard equipment, taping, bracing, eyewear and mouthguards; investigate the impact of heading; prevention of heat illness; impact of environmental factors such as goal post padding and anchoring and suitability of playing surfaces, and; rule modification to address violence or aggression.
