Australian football is a popular sport in Australia with a high incidence of injury because it features high speed running in conjunction with rapid directional change, frequent player collisions, and competition for possession of the ball involving injury risk mid-air and on landing. A total of 723 elite under 18 junior football players participated in the study conducted during the 2002 and 2003 seasons; 114 players in the intervention group and 609 in the control group. An intervention consisting of eight 30-minute sessions delivered weekly as part of team preseason training taught participants landing, falling and recovery skills. As well as injury rates the study measured the effect of the intervention in skill development.

The aim of this prospective controlled trial was to teach landing and recovery skills to elite junior football players and to evaluate the effect of the program on landing skills and injury rates.

| Research Outcomes: |
Players in the intervention group were significantly less likely to sustain an injury than the control group. And while both the control and intervention groups improved their landing skills from the baseline as the season progressed, the intervention group improved significantly more.

| Research Implications: |
Landing and recovery skills can readily be taught as part of preseason training to junior football players significantly reducing their risk of injury when landing from mid-air competition. The six skills taught were prone fall, backward fall, left and right sideways rolling, two foot landing, and back shoulder roll. Skills were initially practiced indoors on mats and then incorporated into game situations during practice on the field.
