Research Summary/Text: Data from sports insurers’ records are potentially useful sources of information to help determine injury prevention priorities using the measures of frequency and cost of injury. Insurance data are routinely kept in a systemic manner with a minimal cost to the researcher and provide financial information that is not usually available with other injury surveillance systems. Insurance records for all accepted netball claims in Victoria, Australia were obtained from the insurer and analysed according to site of injury, age of claimant and amount of payout.
Research Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate insurance records in netball for a one-year period to set a baseline and to determine both injury frequency and associated costs, related to age.
Research Outcomes: Of all injuries 85.3% were to the lower limb, 8.7% to the upper limb, 3.1% to the spine/torso and 2.9% to the head and face. The majority of injuries (71.5%) were to the ankle and knee joints.

As well as being the most common injury type, lower limb injuries accounted for 85% of total injury costs for the 12 month period. Achilles tendon injury was the sixth most common injury but had the highest mean cost. This type of injury occurred only to players 25 years and older.

The 30 and 40 years age group showed the greatest chance of injury, with one injury for every 40 players.
Research Implications: Injury prevention strategies in netball should focus on ankle and knee injury prevention, particularly for those players aged 30-40 years. Strategies aimed at preventing Achilles tendon injury are best targeted at players aged more than 25 years.
